FAQs

What can I expect in the first session when I see a therapist?

Your first session will involve some information gathering. The advantage of Human Givens therapy is that you do not need to go into the finer details of your issue if you find it too upsetting to do so. You will then agree on a goal for therapy and a strategy which meets all of your needs. The aim of each session is to move you closer to your goal each time and send you away feeling calmer, so you will end each session with deep relaxation.

How many sessions will I need?

Human Givens therapy is designed to be brief. This means you will not be expected to be in therapy for months or even years, unlike some other forms of therapy. The average number of sessions is between three and five but some people choose to have more, while others may only have one or two. It is entirely up to you.

How is this therapy different to other types of therapy?

Human Givens is designed as a brief solution focused therapy, with some clients having as few as one or two sessions. Some therapies sign people up for months, if not years of therapy, with the intention of breaking them down before building them back up, and to that end they can be downright harmful. This is neither ethical nor cost effective. Human Givens uses only those techniques which have been shown, in recent studies, to make a significant difference. Techniques have been selected based on new scientifically backed studies and rolls them into this more effective therapy model.
